West Virginia was the 35th state admitted to the Union, on June 20, 1863. Originally the land belonged to Virginia and during the Civil War, a majority of West Virginians opposed secession from the Union. West Virginia is the only state to be formed by seceding from a Confederate state and one of two states formed during the Civil War.
