Price: $9.95
This presentation discusses strategies to show how DNA results can be used to identify family adoptions and other Non-Paternity Events. These events may occur at any point in one’s genealogical paper tree, and sometimes may cause major surprises for DNA users. A case study is presented in which a well-researched family tree was turned upside down by DNA results for the 4th generation.

58 minutes, plus 3 pages of handouts. The recording is also included as part of the monthly or annual membership.

Case studies are used to illustrate the best strategies to use to find the ancestors you need to fill in gaps in your family tree in the 6th and 7th generation. Class members learn how to mix and match the use of Ancestry DNA, FTDNA, and GEDmatch to accumulate DNA evidence while efficiently sorting through the many possible matches.

This was presented to a live webinar audience on January 4, 2017. 1 hour 43 minutes, plus 4 pages of handouts. The recording is also included as part of the monthly or annual membership.

Can you really 'prove' a female line when, for four straight generations, absolutely no document identifies a parent or sibling? Does the challenge seem hopeless when courthouses are burned and an illegitimacy is rumored? This session will demonstrate how to use three critical tools: (1) the FAN Principle to build a case for identity and parentage in each generation; (2) the Genealogical Proof Standard to create proof arguments; and (3) DNA testing—mitochondrial and autosomal—to confirm or disprove the validity of those proof arguments.

This was presented live at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and sponsored by the Board for Certification of Genealogists on October 7, 2016. 56 minutes. For more information about the Board for Certification of Genealogists and genealogy standards, visit www.bcgcertification.org.

As we march forward into another year of genetic genealogy much is being discovered about the ways in which we can analyze our autosomal DNA data. There is a hot debate over two seemingly competing ideas: the DNA Circle, or the Triangulation method. The DNA Circle was pioneered by AncestryDNA and relies on small shared segments and complete family trees. The Triangulation method requires a chromosome browser and detailed calculations of shared amounts of DNA. We will cover questions like, Which is the best route to take? Do I need a chromosome browser? How can I use these methods in my own genealogy? Autosomal DNA is an ever changing field, this lecture will cover the latest methods of analysis and interpretation for the non-scientist genetic genealogist.

Geoff finally did it! He took his first step into the world of DNA and had his two maternal grandparents tested (autosomal tests from AncestryDNA). He recently received the testing results and has waited to explore them – for the first time – in front of a LIVE webinar audience. You are invited to watch live as his DNA results are revealed. He is hoping that somehow DNA will bring down one of his longest-standing brick walls. On hand to interpret and explain what Geoff discovers will be DNA expert, webinar presenter, and yourDNAguide.com’s Diahan Southard. Geoff has kept the results hidden from her as well. The result will be a live and unscripted session giving DNA neophyte (like Geoff) viewers a first-hand look at what to expect from their first autosomal DNA test. This was presented to a live webinar audience on April 19, 2016. 1 hour 42 minutes. The recording is also included as part of the monthly or annual membership.

With slave ancestral research, one is often faced with direct evidence vs. indirect evidence. Many forms of direct evidence that emphatically prove family relationships, birthplaces, and other happenings are often non-existent because slaves were merely considered “property”. Some researchers have been very fortunate to find rare pieces of direct evidence, in the form of old family letters, diaries, ledgers, Bibles, etc., to positively identify enslaved ancestors. Many researchers often rely on a preponderance of indirect evidence to confirm enslaved ancestors. Collier will present cases where DNA was the direct piece of evidence that identified or confirmed an enslaved ancestor.

This was presented to a live webinar audience on April 8, 2016. 1 hour 30 minutes, plus 5 pages of supplemental syllabus materials. The recording is also included as part of the monthly or annual membership.

With the advent of autosomal DNA testing, many are missing out on the power of the YDNA and mtDNA tests. In this fun and interactive lecture we will cover the direct maternal line test, including its pros and cons, and the best time to use it. Similarly, we will talk about the power of YDNA testing for your direct paternal line. Diahan will share case studies for each kind of DNA to help you understand how others have used it to address their family history concerns. Come rejuvenate your family history research with these two DNA tests.

Hundreds of thousands of genetic profiles for family history and ancestral purposes have been generated by private laboratories, universities, and the National Geographic’s Genographic Project during the past fifteen years. However, many individuals that had their DNA tested were somewhat disappointed, as the information provided by many laboratories is often difficult to understand. What do all these numbers and letters mean? What can they tell about my past? As Ann Tuner and Megan Smolenyak stated in their book, Trace Your Roots with DNA, “test results for just one person are like the sound of one hand clapping.” The great paradox in genetic genealogy is the fact that in order to understand your own DNA, you need to know something about the DNA of everyone else! Thankfully, a number of online databases are providing large quantities of searchable data in an effort to provide the missing hand. Knowing which resources are available and how to properly use them is key to understanding our personalize genetic genealogy and getting the most out of our own genetic profile.

This class was presented to a live webinar (online seminar) audience on May 21, 2014. 1 hour 36 minutes plus 3 pages of handouts. The recording is also included as part of the monthly or annual membership.

There are definable trends today in the application of technology to genealogy. The buzzword for 2014 is SYNERGY: [Google’s definition] the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents [technology] to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. This lecture looks at the trends in technology, their applications in genealogy, and the synergy between organizations that impact the ways we’ll do genealogy in the near future. This is being broadcast live from the Orange County California Genealogical Society's 2nd Annual Genealogy Bash.

Among the tens of thousand of individuals that have already experienced the novelty of genetic testing for ancestral or genealogical purposes, many are still wondering about the real benefits that such testing may bring to their family history repertoire. Few individuals may have given in to pressure by others, or simply for curiosity. Whether you have been already tested and are still wondering about what all those letters and numbers from your genetic genealogy report mean, or whether you are contemplating if DNA testing for family history is something for you, this lecture will offer you some online tools that are available to interpret your results and get the most out of your genetic testing. We will also focus on a few successful DNA genealogy cases and conclude with a description of consultation services available to those that think genetic genealogy is an exciting field, but fear it is too complex of a tool to them. Join Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation's senior researcher, Ugo Perego, for this webinar on using DNA tools as part of our research.

This lecture will provide a general overview on how genetic testing can be of great assistance to family historians to trace, verify, expand, and link genealogical records and pedigrees. Particularly, we will cover the paternally-inherited Y chromosome and the maternally-inherited mitochondrial DNA with the purposes of showing how these two markers can play a powerful role in the search for our ancestors. Join Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation's senior researcher, Ugo Perego, for this webinar on using DNA tools as part of our research.
